Topsoils
What is Topsoil?
Good soil is a mixture of mineral particles, air; water, organic matter, living organisms and nutrients. Exact proportions of each are not particularly critical but to constitute a good soil it should contain all these elements.
What volume of soil do you need?
Use the following as a guide for ordering the correct amount of topsoil:
Calculate the cubic volume (width x length x depth)
Use the following formula for estimating the tonnage required: 1 cubic metre=1.5 tonne of topsoil

Soil Structure
Soil structure refers to the arrangement of the sand, silt, clay and organic matter in a soil. It has an impact on a number of areas including:
- Movement of water in a soil
- The amount of air within a soil
- Growth and movements of a rooting system
It is important to note that a compacted and poorly structured soil will result in a less successful planting scheme.
Soil pH
This is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a soil. Although pH 7 is neutral, soil falling within a range of 5.5 - 8.2 pH is quite suitable for most general planting schemes particularly those species which enjoy alkaline and lime soils.
